Cheap Flights to Tonga

Since Captain Cook pronounced Tonga the “Friendly Islands” over 200 years ago very little has changed - but in a good way. The beaches are still beautiful, the rainforest unspoiled and the village customs traditional.

What to know before you fly to Tonga?

Tonga is the only Pacific nation never to have been colonised – its history, culture and traditions are still strong across an indigenous monarchy covering 740,000 square kilometeres of ocean, reefs, rainforests and beaches. If you're a scuba diver or keen snorkeller, this is the place to be in the South Pacific.

The island regions include:

  • Tongatapu – seat of the Royal family, the capital Nuku'alofa (with bustling markets and boats waiting in the harbour to depart to the far-flung islands) overflowing churches on Sundays and tombs of Tongan kings
  • Eua – a rugged, rainforested island southest of Tongatapu with cliffs, caves and sinkholes. A diver's highlight is here too: a large underwater cavern with natural light illuminating an amphitheatre at a depth of almost 30 metres
  • Vava'u – here you'll find a playground of 61 islands with beaches and lagoons galore, magnificent visibility for all aquatic adventures and from June to November humpback whales journey here to calve
  • Ha'apai – here's the heart of the unhurried, unspoilt archipelago; there are 62 islands with eco lodges and village guesthouses scattered in forests by beaches and tucked near lagoons
